Node maintenance mode (graceful drain before update/reboot)
Summary
Adds a maintenance / drain mode an admin can toggle with a signed command. Today the only
admin lever is stopNode, which kills the process immediately and loses every running compute
job and service-on-demand. Maintenance mode gives the missing intermediate state: the node finishes what it already committed to while refusing new work, so an admin can drain it
cleanly before an update or reboot.
While maintenance is ON:
New commitment is rejected — startCompute, freeStartCompute, initializeCompute, serviceStart, serviceExtend return HTTP 503 with a machine-readable code: "MAINTENANCE_MODE". initializeCompute is rejected before any order/payment, so
clients never pay for an order they can't use.
Everything already running keeps working — getComputeStatus, getComputeResult, getComputeStreamableLogs, stopCompute, serviceGetStatus, serviceGetResult, serviceStop, serviceGetStreamableLogs, and serviceRestart (no new commitment) are all
allowed, so every running service has a known end time and the node drains predictably.
The state is persisted and sticky across restarts by design, and exit is manual only.
Design decisions
Toggle: new signed admin command setMaintenance { enabled, nonce, address, signature },
gated identically to every other admin command (ALLOWED_ADMINS / admin access list,
nonce + signature). Also reachable via REST POST /api/admin/maintenance.
Persistence: flag stored in the SQLite config DB (createOrUpdateConfig), mirrored
by an in-memory boolean on OceanNode so the hot path (every compute/service start) never
hits SQLite. Reloaded into the cache at startup.
Boot flag: env MAINTENANCE_MODE lets a node boot straight into maintenance. Only exact true/false are honored (case/space-insensitive); any other value is logged and ignored,
falling back to the persisted flag. Env wins at boot and is written through to the DB.
Manual exit only:no TTL, no auto-clear on drain. When running work reaches zero the
node stays idle in maintenance until an admin sends setMaintenance { enabled: false }.
Because the flag is persisted, a node that reboots mid-drain comes back still in
maintenance (prevents silent re-acceptance of work).
Error discrimination — 503 + code: 503 is the correct "temporarily unavailable, retry
elsewhere" family, but it is already used in these same handlers for "subsystem
unavailable" (e.g. serviceStart → 503 "Compute engines not configured"). So clients must
branch on the code field, not the status. Both the HTTP body { error, code } and the
P2P frame (response.status.code) carry it. Backwards compatible: older clients still see a
readable 503 error body.
Visibility:status.maintenance.enabled is always present (the signal clients/dashboard
read). detailedStatus additionally reports runningComputeJobs, runningServices, and latestExpectedEndTime so the admin knows when it's safe to reboot. Counts and ETA come only
from aggregate values (no job/consumer details exposed).
Incentives: out of scope for the node — it only exposes status.maintenance.enabled;
how the monitor treats a draining node is handled on their side.
SetMaintenanceHandler — signed admin command; validates enabled is a strict boolean on top of the admin auth gate, toggles and persists state

Acceptance criteria
Admin enables/disables maintenance via a signed admin command.
In maintenance, new compute jobs, new services, and service extensions are rejected with a
distinct error (503 + code); status, results, logs, and stop for running work still succeed.
The flag persists across restarts (SQLite config DB + boot reload).
status reports maintenance state and what is still running.
Covered by unit tests for handler gating and an integration test for the drain scenario.
docs/API.md and docs/env.md updated.
Notes for operators
MAINTENANCE_MODE is sticky: a node that reboots while in maintenance stays in maintenance.
Returning to normal service requires an explicit setMaintenance { enabled: false }and
unsetting the env var (a leftover MAINTENANCE_MODE=false will clear a persisted drain at the
next boot).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added maintenance mode to reject new compute and service requests, including compute initialization and service extensions, while allowing existing work to be managed.
Administrators can enable or disable maintenance mode through a signed command or HTTP endpoint. The setting persists across restarts and can be configured at startup with MAINTENANCE_MODE.
Status responses show whether maintenance mode is enabled; detailed status can also report active work and its expected completion time.
Rejected requests return HTTP 503 with a machine-readable maintenance error code.
Documentation
Documented maintenance mode behavior, configuration, and administration.
The change adds persisted maintenance mode, an admin command to toggle it, guards for new compute and service requests, and maintenance details in status responses. It also adds environment-variable handling, coded REST and P2P errors, documentation, and tests.

Fail startup if the maintenance override cannot be persisted
If the write for MAINTENANCE_MODE=true fails, the node continues with maintenance enabled only in memory. A later restart without the override can load false and accept new work.
Retry the write or fail startup. If startup fails, also block or close P2P dispatch before flushing logs: throwing alone leaves the registered handler active until the process exits.

Coordinate maintenance enable with in-flight commitments
A start or extension can pass maintenanceGuard before enable and commit after the enable response. A status check can report no running work before that commitment, so an admin can stop the node while new work is starting.
Coordinate the toggle with the lock, job creation, and extension commitment paths. Ensure admitted requests commit or abort before enable returns, while allowing already-committed work to continue. Another independent guard check would leave a race.

Closes #1574
Node maintenance mode (graceful drain before update/reboot)
Summary
Adds a maintenance / drain mode an admin can toggle with a signed command. Today the only
admin lever is
stopNode, which kills the process immediately and loses every running computejob and service-on-demand. Maintenance mode gives the missing intermediate state: the node
finishes what it already committed to while refusing new work, so an admin can drain it
cleanly before an update or reboot.
While maintenance is ON:
startCompute, freeStartCompute, initializeCompute, serviceStart, serviceExtendreturn HTTP 503 with a machine-readablecode: "MAINTENANCE_MODE".initializeComputeis rejected before any order/payment, soclients never pay for an order they can't use.
getComputeStatus, getComputeResult, getComputeStreamableLogs, stopCompute, serviceGetStatus, serviceGetResult, serviceStop, serviceGetStreamableLogs, andserviceRestart(no new commitment) are allallowed, so every running service has a known end time and the node drains predictably.
admin commands, fees, nonce, persistent storage, access lists, escrow events, auth tokens.
The state is persisted and sticky across restarts by design, and exit is manual only.
Design decisions
setMaintenance { enabled, nonce, address, signature },gated identically to every other admin command (
ALLOWED_ADMINS/ admin access list, nonce + signature). Also reachable via REST
POST /api/admin/maintenance.createOrUpdateConfig), mirroredby an in-memory boolean on
OceanNodeso the hot path (every compute/service start) neverhits SQLite. Reloaded into the cache at startup.
MAINTENANCE_MODElets a node boot straight into maintenance. Only exacttrue/falseare honored (case/space-insensitive); any other value is logged and ignored, falling back to the persisted flag. Env wins at boot and is written through to the DB.
node stays idle in maintenance until an admin sends
setMaintenance { enabled: false }.Because the flag is persisted, a node that reboots mid-drain comes back still in
maintenance (prevents silent re-acceptance of work).
code: 503 is the correct "temporarily unavailable, retryelsewhere" family, but it is already used in these same handlers for "subsystem
unavailable" (e.g.
serviceStart→503 "Compute engines not configured"). So clients mustbranch on the
codefield, not the status. Both the HTTP body{ error, code }and theP2P frame (
response.status.code) carry it. Backwards compatible: older clients still see areadable 503 error body.
status.maintenance.enabledis always present (the signal clients/dashboardread).
detailedStatusadditionally reportsrunningComputeJobs, runningServices, andlatestExpectedEndTimeso the admin knows when it's safe to reboot. Counts and ETA come onlyfrom aggregate values (no job/consumer details exposed).
status.maintenance.enabled;how the monitor treats a draining node is handled on their side.

MAINTENANCE_MODEis sticky: a node that reboots while in maintenance stays in maintenance.Returning to normal service requires an explicit
setMaintenance { enabled: false }andunsetting the env var (a leftover
MAINTENANCE_MODE=falsewill clear a persisted drain at thenext boot).
