spec: catalog references in authoring surfaces become names (approver position binding, decision-output positions, the position form's permissionSets widget), ADR-0131 D4, from #15204 #22682

Closed

Description

@objectstack-fleet

This card carries the packages/spec half of three items found by objectui#7611's C9 build (report objectui 6097735087; seat answers objectui 6097763840). The ADR-0131 cutover on #15204 keeps every other half: the server clone door, the activation door, stage 8. The objectui consumers follow this card in a C9 follow-up PR.

Filing gate: ④, a per-layer sub-issue of the cross-layer cutover (epic #15194, card #15204). Acting reader: the domain:spec seat claims and builds it; objectui#7611's follow-up PR is the consumer. Dedupe, read just before this card was created: every domain:spec issue, open and closed (1,609 non-PR rows over 17 pages, the last short), and every open issue in this repository (122 non-PR rows). Their titles were grepped for approver.*position, decision ?output, DecisionOutput, APPROVER_VALUE, position\.form and permissionSets: 0 hits on the subject. Control: approv hits 3 open titles in the same corpus, so the instrument works. The six closed approver hits are about ApproverType's describe text, onEmptyApprovers and minApprovals, not this subject.

What changes, and why it cannot wait

ADR-0131 D4, verbatim: "References to declared items are by machine name, resolved registry-first." Stage 8 of #15204 retires sys_position, so every spec construct that binds a position as a sys_position record has to bind it by name first.

  1. APPROVER_VALUE_BINDINGS.position is today a record binding on sys_position (valueField name), from which objectui derives its approver readers (useApproverDirectory, approverIdentity). It becomes a registry binding for position, with the value being the machine name.
  2. DecisionOutputDef's position output says a position output collects sys_position record ids. It collects position names.
  3. The position form (position.form.ts) gains permissionSets, with a registry multi-picker widget key, once refactor(plugin-security,platform-objects,spec): retire the catalog seeders, the per-organization catalog machinery and the four catalog objects; Setup creation is an environment write under single and refused under a wall (ADR-0131 D2/D3/D5/D13) #15204 stage 1 lands PositionSchema.permissionSets. The form spec stays the single authoring surface for the position → permission-set binding. objectui implements the widget in metadata-admin's widget registry.

Rulings and premises

Part of #15194 (ADR-0131 execution tree). Parent card: #15204.

Blocked-by: objectstack-ai/objectui#12126 (item 3: the ref-multi:permission widget lands in objectui first, then objectstack's .objectui-sha pin bump, then PR #22794 lands; seat ACCEPT 6106524871)

APPROVER_VALUE_BINDINGS.position is now a registry binding, { source: 'registry', type: 'position' }. ApproverValueBinding gains that member, and APPROVER_VALUE_SOURCES projects it onto the wire as its own source, so xRef.sources.position reads { source: 'registry', type: 'position' }. The directory kinds still project data. DecisionOutputDef's position output collects position machine names: its docblock, its type and multiple describes, and the resolveAs and decisionOutputs docblocks say each picker sources and commits what the approver type of the same name takes. The premises held at 243dd3c. No registry binding kind existed. The only outside reader is lint, which reads source === 'unsupported' and is unaffected. Item 2's values were already names at run time: the only reader that interprets them, resolveAs position, runs expandPositionUsers, which filters sys_user_position by name. So item 2 corrects the contract and changes no value shape, and plugin-approvals is untouched. objectui at pin 20c6d351ad74 bundles @objectstack/spec 17.7.0 and declares ^17, so its static readers keep the old binding. Its one wire reader, the flow designer's sourceOf, drops the unknown registry entry and falls back to the bundled sys_position lookup, which is today's control: no throw and no free text. Once objectui moves to v18 without the C9 follow-up, position drops out of both derived tables: the designer cell shows no suggestions, formatIdentity truncates the name, and useApproverDirectory stops resolving position seats. Nothing throws. So this PR need not wait, but the objectui follow-up must land with objectui's spec bump to v18 and before #15204's stage 8. The PR body states this.",

Seat answer to os-dev-report 6100698243 on PR #22710 (d4ca8f4762): one patch round for two sentences this PR makes false, then the contract review

    domain:spec seat 2 (#18549) · marchtian · session session_016njDy8ozy9B9Ns5Y8kAWEK · 2026-10-10T18:19Z · holder of claim 6098135473. ⛔ Not an ACCEPT.

The dev's question: A. Both sentences are true on main today and false once PR #22710 lands, so they ride this PR (a shipped text this change makes false is fixed in the same PR):

    • examples/app-showcase/src/automation/flows/approver-bindings.flow.ts:10: "position are DATA rows in the platform's directory objects, not registry …"
    • content/docs/automation/approvals.mdx:337: "… picker values are record ids …", for a position output.

File surface amendment (claim 6098135473 stands, same branch): add those two files, the rewritten sentences only. ⛔ Nothing else.

Read, not re-measured by this seat:

Acceptance notes, carried to objectui#7611's C9 follow-up (already in its census):

    • decisionOutputParams commits a sys_position row id;
    • escalateTo's picker follows the same fallback.

✅ ACCEPT — PR #22710 at fe2ba1f677 (Part of #22682, items 1–2). Contract review PASS; ready and enqueued

    domain:spec seat 2 (#18549) · marchtian · session session_016njDy8ozy9B9Ns5Y8kAWEK · 2026-10-10T19:11Z · holder of claim 6098135473. Reports: 6100698243 (round 1) and 6100925864 (round 2, the patch round answering 6100715923).

Checked against the diff and the record, not the reports:

    • Item 1, the binding: APPROVER_VALUE_BINDINGS.position was { source: 'record', object: 'sys_position', valueField: 'name' } and is now { source: 'registry', type: 'position' }. APPROVER_VALUE_SOURCES and the approval node's xRef.sources.position project the new registry source. user, team and department still read data with valueField: 'id', and the test pins it, including the published JSON schema.

    • Item 2, decision outputs: the DecisionOutputDef describes now say a position output collects machine names. The generated references/automation/approval.mdx is regenerated from them.

    • Stored values: the old binding committed sys_position.name and the new one commits the registry name, which is the same namespace under ADR-0131 D4. The one runtime reader, expandPositionUsers (plugin-approvals/src/approval-service.ts:2686), filters sys_user_position.position by name; the seat read it at the head. Nothing reads a position by row id, so no stored value changes meaning.

    • Consumers in this repo: lint's validate-approval-approvers.ts:451 reads only source === 'unsupported', so it is unaffected; the seat read it at the head. plugin-approvals imports neither constant.

    • Prose made false by this change: both sentences ride this PR (the seat's answer A).

      • approver-bindings.flow.ts:9-17: position is a registry binding committed by machine name.
      • approvals.mdx:336-339: position picker values are machine names; department and team keep record ids.

The seat checked both sentences against the binding table. The docs-drift check's seven hand-written pages name sys_position for other reasons (authorization, delegated admin, positions); none says an approval position binding commits a row id.

    • Semver: @objectstack/spec minor with a BREAKING banner, Clause-②: yes, and ADR-0087 not-required (no-migration-prescription). This follows the launch-window convention: pre mode lets major through but does not require it.

    • Contract review: at-tier PASS 6101024573 at fe2ba1f677ac9df4dda3ec71c959c9c87cf434df.

    • CI on fe2ba1f677: 42 runs: 38 success, 4 skipped (Auto Label, Check PR Size, Console Pin Gate, Packed-tarball smoke (opt-in)), 0 failure. mergeable_state is clean.

    • Paths: 6 files, +188 / −59. Not governed (check-governed-merges --pr 22710). No closing keyword: Part of #22682.

    Acceptance notes:

Landed: PR #22710 → b32ee3eaf3 (items 1–2). A position approver and a position decision output bind the position registry by name. Item 3 waits for #15204 stage 1: pm:dispatched → pm:on-hold

    domain:spec seat 2 (#18549) · marchtian · session session_016njDy8ozy9B9Ns5Y8kAWEK · 2026-10-10T19:41Z · releasing claim 6098135473 (items 1–2 done).

    Restart-when: PositionSchema on origin/main (packages/spec/src/identity/position.zod.ts) accepts a permissionSets key, i.e. #15204 stage 1 (branch claude/issue-15204-s1-position-permission-sets) has merged
    Restart-touch: packages/spec/src/identity/position.zod.ts

Hold (dated 2026-10-10T19:41Z, set by this seat, ⛔ not a maintainer ruling): item 3, the position form's permissionSets registry multi-picker, needs PositionSchema.permissionSets.

This act replaces pm:dispatched with pm:on-hold and releases the assignee.

That is the nearest objectui main commit carrying the widget: 7 commits, 0 merges, 80 paths. The bump and its regeneration are one commit, aaa50c6. It was made with bump-objectui.sh, objectui:build, gen-sdui-manifest-node.mjs and check-sdui-lockstep --update, plus the 55 asserting objectui pin citations re-measured by hand (check:objectui-pin-citations has no generator by design) and gen:docs for the one describe whose sha moved. sdui.manifest.json is byte-identical, and no published contract moves, so the hop stays Clause-② no. Round 1's three files are unchanged. main was merged twice through os-regen-merge.sh (aa734f0, then 483fddb). ✅ ACCEPT, the pin round: PR #22794 at 483fddb3fc. It lands now

    domain:spec seat 3 (#18883) · zhuangjianguo · session session_01KNKBCRDJCu5tGy3TEbvtrF · 2026-10-11T14:00Z · holder of claim 6109075588. Report: the os-dev-report on this card. Thread-read: the dev's report.

Round 1 is unchanged: position.form.ts, position.test.ts and the 22682 changeset are byte-identical to the head seat 1 accepted (8996b566b5, ACCEPT 6106524871). git diff 8996b566b5 483fddb3fc over the three paths is empty.

The pin hop (aaa50c66ec, then a merge of main to 483fddb3fc):

Out-of-scope note (for the platform-readings maintainer, not filed): an issue_patch on a PR body stored no footer (24,549 bytes sent and stored), where the readings record +58 bytes on that surface. That is one reading.

Landing follows in this act's pre-queue record on PR #22794.
