Summary

JEP-0013 Phase 3 PR D**: forward PushLogs to Loki so edge logs are not stuck on telemetry stdout.

Depends on PR A: #1060
Depends on PR B: #1061

Independent of PR C (#1062) — MetricsStream spoke. Independent of E (jmp PushLogs) at the protocol layer; E will sit on this branch. Do not merge until A and B are on main, then rebase.

  • Loki HTTP POST /loki/api/v1/push. grpc:// / grpcs:// are rejected with an error (reserved, not implemented).
  • Bounded ring buffer (default depth 10 000). Overflow → one drop-marker LogEntry (severity=warning, component=telemetry, operation=backpressure, count / window_seconds) + jumpstarter_telemetry_dropped_total{destination="loki"}.
  • CR: spec.telemetry.loki.{url,secretRef,tls.caSecretRef,tls.insecureSkipVerify} and spec.telemetry.backpressure.queueDepth. Empty loki.url remains metrics-only (JEP). Credentials come from LOKI_USERNAME / LOKI_PASSWORD / LOKI_TOKEN via secretRef.
  • Stdout JSON is unchanged for Phase 5 shippers. /readyz does not gate on Loki (metrics-only is valid).

Lab: exporter PushLogs (start / on / wake / TFTP/HTTP) showed up on telemetry stdout; jumpstarter_telemetry_dropped_total{destination="loki"} stayed 0. Error-severity exporter events (for example TFTP Failed to send block 1) are still re-logged with logger.Error(nil, message, …), so they look like a telemetry stack in JSON. That mapping is the existing PushLogs stdout path (#930), not a new Loki bug. This PR does not change severity → zap mapping.

DEMO

The lab walkthrough for the stacked Phase 3 work (A+B+C+D+E plus lab-only Route) is on the fork demo branch, not this PR:

PushLogs on that run is the operation ledger while reverse-scrape omits exemplar-bearing snapshots (A / DD-3).

Unique work vs A+B: ac7e0835. If GitHub shows A/B commits, that is stacking against main; review that unique commit only.

Out of scope

  • MetricsStream protocol, parse-error omit, OpenMetrics exemplar decode (A / JEP-0013 Phase 3 - MetricsStream #1060)
  • /telemetry image, metrics :8080, scrape CR fields (B / JEP-0013 Phase 3 - operator image #1061)
  • Exporter MetricsStream client and Register identity (C / JEP-0013 Phase 3 - exporter MetricsStream #1062)
  • jmp PushLogs / client tokens (E)
  • Changing PushLogs stdout logger.Error(nil, …) for exporter error events (TFTP dual-RRQ noise in the lab)
  • Advertising a Route/hostname for out-of-cluster exporters (lab-only on the demo branch)
  • Loki gRPC push, multi-replica HA (DD-8), in-cluster log scraping / Promtail (Phase 5)

NOTE

Open #1027 also touches telemetry operator files (log-ingest e2e).

📝 Walkthrough

The telemetry API and CRD add metrics, Loki, TLS, and backpressure settings. The telemetry service can queue and send logs to Loki. The operator configures the telemetry container, and the build targets package its binary.

Changes: Telemetry and Loki delivery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Telemetry configuration contract
controller/deploy/operator/api/v1alpha1/*, controller/deploy/operator/config/crd/bases/operator.jumpstarter.dev_jumpstarters.yaml
The telemetry API and CRD add metrics, Loki, TLS, and queue-depth settings. Deepcopy methods support the new configuration types.

The service prepares accepted log entries and optionally forwards them through a bounded Loki queue. It serializes grouped HTTP payloads, tracks dropped entries, and restores batches after failed pushes. Shutdown waits for the final flush to complete.
Operator and telemetry runtime wiring
controller/cmd/telemetry/*, controller/deploy/operator/internal/controller/jumpstarter/telemetry.go, controller/deploy/operator/internal/controller/jumpstarter/telemetry_*_test.go, controller/deploy/operator/internal/controller/jumpstarter/jumpstarter_controller.go

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6e8b7

The telemetry metrics endpoint can omit exporters using OpenMetrics exemplars and conflate same-named exporters across namespaces. Resolve or explicitly accept these reporting gaps before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6e8b7

Loki forwarding preserves authenticated exporter identity and remains isolated from telemetry availability. However, permanently rejected log batches are retried without isolating the offending entries, which can cause newer logs from unrelated exporters to be discarded. The deployed Loki acceptance rules and network restrictions remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Permanent payload rejection has no terminal disposition or producer isolation. An authenticated exporter controls its log timestamps and messages; if an entry causes persistent Loki rejection, the entire shared batch is repeatedly restored ahead of newer entries. As the queue fills, newer logs from unrelated exporters are discarded, potentially suppressing security-relevant logging across the telemetry instance. The deployed rejection and partial-ingestion policies are unknown; stdout logging and telemetry availability remain intact.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The retry failure domain includes all exporters and namespaces feeding a given telemetry pusher, rather than only the producer of a rejected event. Exposure is limited to optional downstream log delivery; the inspected path does not grant exporters Loki credentials or destination-selection authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A valid exporter token permits submission of caller-chosen timestamps and messages without validation against downstream acceptance limits. If those inputs cause persistent rejection, whole-batch restoration can pin shared capacity and discard subsequent logs. This is a source-supported conditional attack path, not a verified exploit against the deployed Loki configuration.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Configuration writers select the outbound destination and namespace-local credential references; telemetry uses those credentials rather than passing them to exporters. HTTPS-required credentials and redirect rejection constrain transport exposure, but do not enforce an approved destination. Whether configuration permissions and external egress policy sufficiently restrict that authority remains unknown.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Retained stdout, independent readiness, bounded queue state, and a timed final flush contain Loki outages without making ingestion depend on the remote sink. Delivery is nevertheless best-effort across process exit, and ambiguous HTTP completion can replay already accepted entries because no client-side deduplication mechanism is present.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a terminal path for permanently rejected payloads and isolate offending entries or producers so retries cannot indefinitely consume shared capacity. Expose delivery failures separately from overflow counts, and document replay and shutdown-loss semantics.
  • proposed — Where configuration writers are less trusted than telemetry's credential authority, enforce approved destinations through admission and workload egress policy, and prevent production use of certificate-verification bypass.

## Summary

JEP-0013 Phase 3 PR A**: the `MetricsStream` contract and the telemetry
reverse-scrape hub. This is the merge-base for the rest of the Phase 3
series.

Related PRs will be linked here as they are opened (B, C, D, E). This PR
stays draft until those links are filled in.

- Add `MetricsStream` to `telemetry.proto` (register + scrape
request/response) and regenerate Go + Python stubs.
- Telemetry fans out scrapes over connected streams, merges OpenMetrics,
remaps unknown `driver_type` to `other`, and serves `GET /metrics` on a
dedicated HTTP port (not gRPC `:9093`).
- `/healthz` and `/readyz` as in DD-7.
`jumpstarter_scrape_timeouts_total` on scrape timeout.
- **Lab follow-up in the same PR:** stop silently dropping unparseable
exporter snapshots. Log `exporter metrics snapshot omitted` and
increment `jumpstarter_metrics_parse_errors_total{exporter}` on the same
`/metrics` response. Python `prometheus_client` OpenMetrics exemplars
(`# {lease_id=...}`) still fail `parseMetricFamilies`; the snapshot is
omitted so one exporter cannot 500 the hub. Fixing OpenMetrics/exemplar
parse is a later pass — not this PR.

No exporter client, no operator/image/CRD, no Loki in this PR.

### IMPORTANT NOTES

* See [MetricsStream during the
lease](https://github.com/RoddieKieley/jumpstarter/blob/jep-0013-phase3-demo/DEMO.md#metricsstream-during-the-lease)
for an important caveat about the implementation about a potential
limitation pointed out in the original JEP-0013 DD-3 regarding potential
limitations for exemplar support.
* Register identity must be exporter_name after jumpstarter-dev#1058 (not Metadata.name
/ "unknown"). That is in PR C.

| E | `jep-0013-phase3-client-pushlogs` | jumpstarter-dev#1064  |

Reverse-scrape is useful only after **A+B+C**. This PR is still
reviewable alone with mock streams.

```
## Out of scope / later passes
- Exporter client (C), operator image/metrics port (B), Loki (D), `jmp`
logs (E)
- OpenMetrics exemplar parse (hub still omits those snapshots; now
visible)
- `ServiceMonitor` (Phase 5), driver telemetry API (Phase 4),
multi-replica sticky streams (DD-8)
- Out-of-cluster telemetry Route
## NOTES
### Known merge work (not new features)
* jumpstarter-dev#1062 conflicts with main on exporter.py because of
[jumpstarter-dev#1059](jumpstarter-dev#1059). When
C rebases, keep identity=exporter_name, _session_labels(), and jumpstarter-dev#1059’s
exporter_name= on Session(...).
* [jumpstarter-dev#1027](jumpstarter-dev#1027)
still overlaps operator telemetry files with B/D.
The series is still based on jumpstarter-dev#1058. After A lands, rebase the rest onto
current main (jumpstarter-dev#1059) as a set.
### Explicitly later (already called out as out of scope)
* OpenMetrics exemplar parse (A omits those snapshots; JEP DD-3)
* ServiceMonitor (Phase 5), driver telemetry API (Phase 4)
* Out-of-cluster telemetry Route (demo-only)
* Changing PushLogs logger.Error(nil, …) for exporter TFTP errors
* Cosmetic only: jumpstarter-dev#1060 still has the[ jep-0013-phase3-demo.
## Summary
JEP-0013 Phase 3 PR B**: make the MetricsStream hub from PR A runnable
in-cluster.
Depends on **PR A**:
jumpstarter-dev#1060
Do not merge until A is on `main`, then rebase this branch onto `main`.
Related PRs C–E will be linked here as they are opened.
- Build and copy `/telemetry` in `controller/Containerfile` and `make
build` / `docker-build-ci` (operator already `Command: ["/telemetry"]`;
`main` still only ships `manager` + `router`).
- Expose telemetry HTTP metrics on Service/container port **8080**;
`/healthz` and `/readyz` probes on that port (replacing TCP probes on
gRPC `:9093`).
- CR: `spec.telemetry.metrics.scrapeTimeout`, `driverTypeEnum`,
`exemplarKeys`. Defaults match JEP-0013 (`7s`, the driver-type enum,
`client,lease_id`). **No** `ServiceMonitor` (Phase 5).
- Set `GRPC_TELEMETRY_ENDPOINT` so the telemetry process advertises the
in-cluster Service DNS.
**TLS:**
[jumpstarter-dev#1023](jumpstarter-dev#1023)
already landed telemetry TLS on `main`. This PR keeps that path
(cert-manager **or** manual `spec.telemetry.grpc.tls.certSecret`,
rolling-restart hash, non-fatal missing CA). It does **not** reimplement
**Lab:** in-cluster reverse-scrape of `GET /metrics` on Service port
8080 worked (port-forward). After driver ops, Python OpenMetrics
exemplars still fail Go `parseMetricFamilies`; the hub from A omits that
snapshot and increments `jumpstarter_metrics_parse_errors_total`.
`spec.telemetry.metrics.exemplarKeys` only allowlists keys on the merge
path **after** a successful parse — it does not fix exemplar decode.
That remains A / JEP DD-3, not this PR.
## DEMO
The lab walkthrough for the stacked Phase 3 work (A+B+C+D+E plus
lab-only Route) is on the fork demo branch, not this PR:
-
[DEMO.md](https://github.com/RoddieKieley/jumpstarter/blob/jep-0013-phase3-demo/DEMO.md)
-
[jep-0013-phase3-demo.cast](https://github.com/RoddieKieley/jumpstarter/blob/jep-0013-phase3-demo/jep-0013-phase3-demo.cast)
See [MetricsStream during the
lease](https://github.com/RoddieKieley/jumpstarter/blob/jep-0013-phase3-demo/DEMO.md#metricsstream-during-the-lease)
for the DD-3 exemplar limitation observed on `:8080`.
Unique work vs PR A: the operator/image commit on this branch
(`435eebee`). If GitHub shows A's commits, that is stacking against
`main`; review that unique commit only.
## Out of scope
- MetricsStream protocol and parse-error omit (A / jumpstarter-dev#1060)
- Exporter MetricsStream client and Register `identity` (C) — after
`jumpstarter-dev#1058`, identity must be `exporter_name`, not `Metadata.name`
- Loki / PushLogs (D, E), including exporter TFTP errors that only show
up on the log path
- Advertising a Route/hostname for out-of-cluster exporters (lab-only on
the demo branch)
- `ServiceMonitor` (Phase 5)
Forward PushLogs to Loki through a bounded ring buffer so a slow sink
cannot stall exporters; overflow becomes one drop-marker LogEntry and
jumpstarter_telemetry_dropped_total{destination="loki"}.
Signed-off-by: Roddie Kieley <rkieley@redhat.com>
The configured URL can carry userinfo or a query token. Log scheme and host only.
Restoring a failed batch in front of entries accepted during the request could exceed queue depth. Overflow now becomes the existing drop marker.
The final flush stays in Run and starts only after HTTP and gRPC have stopped, so shutdown cannot exit while entries are still buffered.
Plain HTTP stays available for an endpoint with no token, password, or URL userinfo.
A 307 or 308 would resend the batch and can carry Authorization onto another URL. The configured endpoint is the only destination.
Cleanup runs last-registered first, and Server.Close waits for the handler blocked on that release.
Stdout shipping of the same events double-ingests them, and the telemetry CRD descriptions no longer cite JEP-0013.
