Remove computer monitor from landing page

I'm surprised it's an LCD and not a CRT, because that would have fit the vibe a lot better.

Anyhow, it feels so dated having that image to point users to Downloads.

@Paulie-Aditya I don't know exactly what I want instead. But at the moment I am thinking we can simply remove the monitor, and make left side page-wide. There are downloads in there already, and in #2053 we're adding more items, so it would make sense to give them more space.

But I'm open to other proposals as well. We don't have a UX designer assigned, and we're all here basically doing something what we think works well. So I'm welcoming any other creative proposal too. Feel free to create some crude screenshots of rough proposals (made with dirty code) and post them here to explore ideas.

Honestly,I would'nt prefer it to be completely removed as that would actually end up being too plain ...instead make it a more retro one like the old mac models (Too modern stuff would kill the current vibe of the site).

@Aashaan403 Obviously that's a matter of taste. But I like your thought. I agree this site has some kind of a retro vibe, and I like that as well. But personally I think the current monitor just looks ugly. Maybe something more of a contemporary illustration of a monitor would work better.

I found that Linus Torvads first computer was Commodore VIC-20.

I think this actually has a good vibe with the site color and also has a little easter egg considering the fact that this is the very first model used by Linus Torvalds at the age of 11 were he developed the passion for coding which is like a butterfly effect thnking right now.

But it is hard to find good quality images of it

I found that Linus Torvads first computer was Commodore VIC-20.

Incidentally, that was also the first computer I got my hands on, at the age of 9.

The form factor was actually the same as the C-64, just the beige color was a bit lighter.

At the same time, I distinctly remember that there was no Git available on the VIC-20, and given a total RAM of 3.5kB (0.5 of which was used for the 22x23 screen), it is hard to imagine that it ever will.

The worst part of it: the VIC-20 had to be connected to a TV (or CRT monitor). And while there was an official Commodore floppy drive and datasette that are readily associated with the VIC-20, the official Commodore monitor was never really a thing because so many people simply connected the computer to their TV because they already had it. So whatever screen you show won't be recognizable as "typical VIC-20". The best you could do would be to imitate the screen colors and font, like so:

But this gives off ugly Geocities vibes. So I don't really think that it would be a good idea to use that kind of visual language.

Damn..That was something interesting to hear.
And yeah I too would'nt prefer the font to be as such like that.
We could modernise that part and use a better visual language.(Guess that could bring a hybrid combo of old retro and modern UI)

That's minimalistic and very elegant.
But personally to me even the ugly tv monitor was kinda interesting to an extend as it would give off a vibe like "even the famous git site has an playful side to include monitors in this age and era".
