refactor!: remove deprecated message APIs before v15 GA - #3387
Builds on #3386 (REACT-1278), now merged into master.
🎯 Goal
Remove the APIs that v14 deprecated or that never worked, before v15 GA, and fix the mention, avatar and thread-head behaviour that the removals exposed.
🛠 Implementation details
Removed, with their replacements (each one has an entry in ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md and a step in ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md):
Removed
Use instead
Entry
renderText(text, mentionedUsers, options)
renderText(text, options) with options.messageMentionEntities (getRenderTextMentionEntities(message))
BC-087
node.mentionedUser in custom mention renderers
node.mentionedEntity
BC-088
the mentioned_users argument of onMentionsClick / onMentionsHover, and MentionedUserEventHandler
handlers get (event, message); type them as CustomMentionHandler
PinEnabledUserRoles, PinPermissions (never in v14 stable)
useMessagePermissions(message).canPin

BC-094
disableQuotedMessages on MessageList / Message, and the second argument of useMessagePermissions

BC-095
Mention, avatar and thread-head behaviour:
Mentions are interactive (pointer cursor, separate focus stop, Enter/Space) only when an onMentionsClick handler is set. useMentionsHandler and the message context's onMentionsClickMessage / onMentionsHoverMessage are undefined without one (BC-093). MessageText marks the interactive case with str-chat__message-text-inner--mentions-clickable.
A message re-renders when a mention handler is added or removed after it first rendered.
Mention and user handlers swapped after a message rendered reach it: they are wrapped with useStableCallback.
showAvatar on MessageList, VirtualizedMessageList or Message now takes effect: Message passes it into MessageContext, where MessageUI reads it, and a change re-renders the message.
The thread's parent message gets the list-wide message props its replies get (useThreadHead(messageProps)), so onMentionsClick, onUserClick, renderText and showAvatar work on it. Only the props that are set are passed.
messageHasMentions(message) is a new export.
Examples: the cookbook recipes and the vite custom message UI treat only replies as thread messages (useThreadContext() and not initialMessage), so the thread's parent keeps its read receipts, status and actions.
Checks:yarn test (3434 tests), yarn types, yarn lint, yarn build, validate-translations, validate-entry-isolation, and type-checks of the vite and cookbook examples all pass. Mention clicks, the thread parent message, VirtualizedMessageList paging and the cookbook recipes were checked in the browser.
Follow-ups:
REACT-1509: mentions with the same display text link to the first matching entity.
additionalMessageComposerProps on MessageList, VirtualizedMessageList and Message is read by no component; removing it needs its own ticket and BC entry.
🎨 UI Changes
Mentions show a pointer cursor only when an onMentionsClick handler is set; otherwise they keep the default cursor.
showAvatar now changes whether a message shows its avatar.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Message lists now pass applicable message settings to thread-parent messages.
Mention interactions support click and hover handlers independently; mention callbacks receive the event and message.
Updates
Message permissions are now based on channel capabilities rather than user-role flags.
Thread replies no longer show read, delivery, or sent statuses; read receipts remain available for the thread’s parent message.
Text rendering now accepts mention entities through its options. Virtualized list settings are configured through additional Virtuoso properties.
Documentation
Updated the breaking-changes guide with new entries and revised migration notes.
MessageContext declared threadList, firstOfGroup, endOfGroup and
groupedByUser, but no message list set them. groupStyles is now the
single source of grouping, and thread detection is useThreadContext().
- Remove threadList from MessageProps and MessageContextValue.
ReactionSelector.getDialogId takes only { messageId }; each list's own
dialog manager keeps a message's channel and thread dialogs apart.
- Remove endOfGroup, firstOfGroup and groupedByUser from MessageContext
and the str-chat__virtual-message__wrapper--* classes. The default
MessageUI renders the metadata on every message and the
str-chat__li--top/--middle CSS hides it.
- Rename MessageList.noGroupByUser and
VirtualizedMessageList.shouldGroupByUser to groupByUser (defaults
true and false), and the groupStyles function prop to getGroupStyles,
called with one GetGroupStylesParams object.
- Share the group-style loop as getMessageGroupStyles. The virtualized
list now recomputes group styles when a message changes, not only
when the count does.
BREAKING CHANGE: MessageProps.threadList, MessageContextValue.threadList,
endOfGroup, firstOfGroup and groupedByUser are removed, as are the
str-chat__virtual-message__wrapper--* classes. noGroupByUser and
shouldGroupByUser are replaced by groupByUser, the groupStyles prop by
getGroupStyles, and getGroupStyles and useEnrichedMessages take objects
with groupByUser. See BC-079 and BC-080 in ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md.
Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1278
The cookbook recipes and the vite example read isInThread from
useThreadContext() instead of MessageContext.threadList, and the vite
example passes groupByUser to VirtualizedMessageList.
Remove the APIs that were deprecated in v14, and tidy the mention and
thread-head handling around them.
- renderText(text, options): the mentionedUsers argument is removed;
mentions come from options.messageMentionEntities.
- The Mention node carries mentionedEntity only.
- onMentionsClick / onMentionsHover are called with (event, message);
MentionedUserEventHandler is removed.
- useUserRole is renamed to useMessagePermissions and no longer returns
isAdmin, isModerator or isOwner.
- PinEnabledUserRoles and PinPermissions are removed.
- VirtualizedMessageList drops defaultItemHeight, overscan and
scrollSeekPlaceHolder; pass them through additionalVirtuosoProps.
- mentionsMarkdownPlugin and createMentionPluginAndDisplayTextSet take
mention entities only.
- Mentions are interactive (pointer, focus stop, Enter/Space) only when
onMentionsClick is set; the message-context mention handlers and
useMentionsHandler's handlers are undefined without one.
- The thread's parent message gets the list-wide message props its
replies get, so onMentionsClick and onUserClick work on it.
- Mention and user handlers swapped after a message rendered reach it.
BREAKING CHANGE: see ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md and
ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md for each removed or changed API and its
replacement.
The pull request updates message rendering, mention handlers, message permissions, and message-list APIs. It changes how list props reach thread heads and removes several message and virtualized-list props. Tests, examples, and v15 breaking-change documentation reflect these updates.

Summary
Mention rendering contract and callers src/components/Message/renderText/*, src/components/Message/MessageText.tsx, src/components/MessageComposer/QuotedMessagePreview.tsx, examples/cookbook/src/recipes/search/mentions-inbox/MentionsInbox.tsx
renderText now takes options as its second argument, and mention plugins accept RenderTextMentionEntity[]. Mention nodes use a unified mentionedEntity field. Tests and callers use this form.
Mention handlers receive the event and message. Their context properties are optional, and stable wrappers call the latest configured handlers. Message text enables click interaction only when a click handler is configured.
useUserRole is replaced by useMessagePermissions. The hook no longer returns admin, owner, or moderator flags, and quote permission depends on the channel capability. Related consumers and tests use the updated hook.
Thread-head props and message-list configuration src/components/MessageList/*, src/components/Message/types.ts, examples/cookbook/src/recipes/message-list/*, examples/vite/src/CustomMessageUi/variants.tsx
Message lists pass defined shared props to ThreadHead while setting its message to the thread parent. defaultItemHeight, overscan, and scrollSeekPlaceHolder are removed as dedicated virtualized-list props. disableQuotedMessages is removed from message and list props. The read-receipt example now retains readers for a thread parent and suppresses them for replies.

useThreadContext() is set for the thread parent as well as its replies,
so the read-receipt recipe and the vite custom message UI hid the
parent's receipts, status and actions. Treat only replies as thread
messages by also checking MessageContext.initialMessage.

Not changed: all 88 index rows (BC-001 to BC-088) use the same #bc-NNN links with no heading anchors, so the new rows follow the file's convention. Fixing the links means changing the whole index, which is outside this PR.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@MartinCupela Understood. The new rows follow the existing #bc-NNN pattern in ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md. The fragment mismatch affects the whole index, not only these ten rows.
I accept leaving that cleanup outside this PR. Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for all 88 index links?
…licked mention
The cookbook custom message UIs treated the thread parent as a reply,
hiding its status, reply count, pin and reply actions; only replies are
thread messages now (useThreadContext() and not initialMessage).
The onMentionsClick migration example reads data-user-id from the
clicked mention instead of opening the first mentioned user, and the
mentionsMarkdownPlugin test builds its entity from the user fixtures.

Enter or Space on the focused message text calls onMentionsClick with
the text element as the target, so no mention is identified. The

mentions exactly one user, and the prose says what the target is.

disableQuotedMessages is removed from MessageProps, MessageListProps and
useMessagePermissions, whose canQuote is now the quote-message
capability alone. The default message actions never honoured the flag;
hide the Quote action with a messageActionSet instead.
Message now forwards showAvatar into MessageContext, where MessageUI
reads it, and both message memo comparators re-render when it changes.

…en the clicked mention
- The example message UIs treat every message shown in a thread, the parent
included, as a thread message for status, pin, reply and reply count, as the
SDK's MessageStatus and default actions do. The parent gets no readBy or
deliveredTo, so it showed "Sent" for read messages, and its pin went to the
thread's paginator.
- The vite example opens the clicked mention's user, not the first mentioned
user.
- The docs say the read state does not reach the thread's parent message and
that groupStyles may be undefined.
- The grouping test gives its messages distinct ids.

#3386 landed as a squash commit. This branch already holds its changes,
so each conflict keeps this branch's side, plus master's two later
sentences on positional getGroupStyles functions.

Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1467
Builds on #3386 (REACT-1278), now merged into
master.🎯 Goal
Remove the APIs that v14 deprecated or that never worked, before v15 GA, and fix the mention, avatar and thread-head behaviour that the removals exposed.
🛠 Implementation details
Removed, with their replacements (each one has an entry in
ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.mdand a step inai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md):renderText(text, mentionedUsers, options)renderText(text, options)withoptions.messageMentionEntities(getRenderTextMentionEntities(message))node.mentionedUserin custom mention renderersnode.mentionedEntitymentioned_usersargument ofonMentionsClick/onMentionsHover, andMentionedUserEventHandler(event, message); type them asCustomMentionHandleruseUserRole(message).isAdmin/.isModerator/.isOwnercan*flags, oruseChannelCapabilities()VirtualizedMessageListdefaultItemHeight,overscan,scrollSeekPlaceHolderadditionalVirtuosoPropsuseUserRoleuseMessagePermissions(returns the same flags)PinEnabledUserRoles,PinPermissions(never in v14 stable)useMessagePermissions(message).canPinmentionsMarkdownPlugin/createMentionPluginAndDisplayTextSettaking aUserResponse[]disableQuotedMessagesonMessageList/Message, and the second argument ofuseMessagePermissionsmessageActionSetwithout thequoteitem, through theMessageActionsslot. The default actions already ignored the flag in v14, so nothing changes on screenMention, avatar and thread-head behaviour:
onMentionsClickhandler is set.useMentionsHandlerand the message context'sonMentionsClickMessage/onMentionsHoverMessageareundefinedwithout one (BC-093).MessageTextmarks the interactive case withstr-chat__message-text-inner--mentions-clickable.useStableCallback.showAvataronMessageList,VirtualizedMessageListorMessagenow takes effect:Messagepasses it intoMessageContext, whereMessageUIreads it, and a change re-renders the message.useThreadHead(messageProps)), soonMentionsClick,onUserClick, renderTextandshowAvatarwork on it. Only the props that are set are passed.messageHasMentions(message)is a new export.Examples: the cookbook recipes and the vite custom message UI treat only replies as thread messages (
useThreadContext()and notinitialMessage), so the thread's parent keeps its read receipts, status and actions.Checks:
yarn test(3434 tests),yarn types, yarn lint, yarn build,validate-translations,validate-entry-isolation, and type-checks of the vite and cookbook examples all pass. Mention clicks, the thread parent message,VirtualizedMessageListpaging and the cookbook recipes were checked in the browser.Follow-ups:
