fix(custom-tools): expose tools that declare parameters; re-register on schema change - #1501
Custom tools that declare parameters never reached clients, and a custom tool whose schema changed kept serving its first signature until the server restarted. Both come from the server side of custom-tool registration.
Parameters dropped._build_global_tool_handler stamps a synthetic __signature__ / __annotations__ on the handler, then log_execution / telemetry_tool wrap it with functools.wraps. inspect.signature follows __wrapped__ and looks right, but FastMCP builds the schema with pydantic's TypeAdapter, which reads the wrapper's own empty __annotations__ and raises KeyError on the first parameter. The tool was dropped with a one-line warning and no traceback, so clients only saw the built-ins and execute_custom_tool.
Schema changes ignored. Unity re-registers custom tools on every domain reload, but the registry kept the first definition ("keeping existing definition"). After adding parameters to a tool, the server kept the old signature and rejected the new arguments ("unexpected keyword argument") while mcpforunity://custom-tools showed them.

Re-stamp the outermost callable and drop __wrapped__, so pydantic and inspect agree.
Order required parameters before optional ones when building the signature (the C# reflection order is not guaranteed; a defaulted parameter first raised ValueError).
Register each tool independently: one bad tool is skipped and named instead of costing the plugin every other tool in the batch.
Log what was registered, and report a missing CustomToolService above debug level.
Treat a changed schema as an update (remove the stale FastMCP tool, register the new one); an identical definition stays a no-op so ordinary reloads don't churn. Removal tries the spellings FastMCP has used across >=3.0.2,<4; if none exists the old tool keeps serving.
New tests: Server/tests/test_custom_tool_reregistration.py.

Python tests: 1582 passed, 18 skipped on this branch. Server-only change: no Unity code is touched, so Unity EditMode/PlayMode tests and the package compile check do not apply. The new tests were also run against beta alone, where they fail (5 failed, 1 passed), which shows the bug is still present there. In use across 14 Unity projects (Unity 6000.0.78f1 and 6000.5.2f1) from the tag above.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved custom-tool registration so one tool’s failure does not prevent other tools from being registered.
Updated tools are replaced when their schemas change, while unchanged tools remain registered without unnecessary updates. If an existing tool cannot be removed, its current definition remains active.
Custom-tool parameters are presented with required fields before optional fields, and unsupported parameter names are excluded.
Built-in tool names are skipped, and registration issues are reported more clearly, including when custom tools cannot be exposed.
Connected clients are notified of tool-list changes after registration completes, so they can retrieve the updated tool details.
Unity re-registers its custom tools on every domain reload, but the registry kept
whatever definition arrived first and logged "keeping existing definition" for the
rest. That froze a tool's signature at its earliest version: after adding parameters
to an existing custom tool, the server went on serving the old zero-argument
signature and rejecting the arguments the tool now declared ("unexpected keyword
argument"), while mcpforunity://custom-tools plainly showed the new parameters.
Only a server restart cleared it, which the symptom gives no hint of.
Treat a changed schema as an update: remove the stale tool from FastMCP and register
the new one. An identical definition stays a no-op so ordinary domain reloads don't
churn the registry. Removal tries the spellings FastMCP has used across the supported
range (>=3.0.2,<4); if none is available the old tool keeps serving rather than being
dropped from the registry while FastMCP still routes to it.
Any custom tool with parameters was silently dropped: it never reached FastMCP's
registry, so clients saw only the built-ins and `execute_custom_tool`.
Root cause: `_build_global_tool_handler` stamps a synthetic `__signature__` and
`__annotations__` on the handler, and the `log_execution` / `telemetry_tool`
decorators then wrap it with `functools.wraps`. `inspect.signature` follows
`__wrapped__` and reports the correct signature — so the handler looked right from
every angle — but FastMCP builds its schema with pydantic's `TypeAdapter`, which
reads the WRAPPER's own (empty) `__annotations__` and raises `KeyError` on the first
parameter name. The tool was then dropped with a one-line warning and no traceback.
Re-stamp the outermost callable and drop `__wrapped__` so both agree.
Three further robustness fixes found alongside it:
* Order required parameters before optional ones when building the signature.
Python forbids a non-default argument after a defaulted one, and the incoming
order is whatever the plugin declared — C# reflection order in the Unity package,
which is not guaranteed, so an author cannot reliably control it. Getting it wrong
raised ValueError.
* Register each tool independently. That ValueError escaped `register_global_tools`
and cost the plugin every OTHER tool in the batch; a bad tool is now skipped and
named.
* Say what happened. This path had no success log, so "no custom tools appeared" and
"no custom tools were offered" were indistinguishable, and a missing
CustomToolService was reported at debug level while silently disabling every
custom tool.
Global custom-tool registration now handles tools independently, replaces changed definitions when removal succeeds, and avoids re-registering identical definitions. Generated handler signatures place required parameters before optional parameters. PluginHub registers tools before notifying clients of tool-list changes.
Registration handles tools independently. It replaces changed definitions when removal succeeds, retains identical definitions, and restores the previous definition if replacement fails. PluginHub notifies clients after registration. Tests cover these outcomes, registration failures, and notification ordering.
Generated signatures exclude invalid parameter names and order required parameters before optional parameters. Tests check parameter ordering and handler annotations.

When two connected Unity projects declare the same custom tool name with different parameters, the later registration now replaces the earlier schema, and the earlier project's calls can fail validation. Both previously open concerns, restoring the old tool after a refused replacement and notifying clients after registration, are fixed in this change. Resolve or explicitly accept the cross-project schema collision before merging.

Notify clients after the global signature changes.
On a schema update, this awaited notification runs before register_global_tools replaces the FastMCP tool at Lines 550–551. An MCP client can refresh its tool list during that interval, receive the old signature, and receive no notification after replacement. Move the notification after global registration so connected clients can discover the new signature. FastMCP documents automatic change notifications only within an active MCP request context; this WebSocket registration path should not rely on one. (github.com)

… tool when it cannot be removed
Review follow-up.
- _register_global_tool now says whether FastMCP serves the tool afterwards. A tool FastMCP refused
was still listed under "Custom tools exposed globally"; it is now reported as skipped.
- _unregister_global_tool says whether the tool was removed. When no removal API worked, the new
schema was still registered on top of the tool FastMCP routes; registration now stops there and
the previous definition keeps serving, as the docstring already promised.
Tests: the no-removal test checks that the first definition is the one kept; a refused tool is
reported as skipped, not exposed.
…fused; notify after registering
Review follow-up.
- When the old definition had been removed and FastMCP then refused the new one, the tool was gone
altogether. The previous definition is now registered again, so a bad schema update never costs a
working tool.
- register_tools notified connected clients that the tool list changed before the custom tools were
re-registered, so a prompt re-fetch could still see the old signature. The notification now comes
after registration.
Tests: a refused replacement restores the previous tool; the notification follows registration.

Keep schemas separate across projects when replacing a global tool.
register_global_tools stores one FastMCP definition per tool name. A later project with a different schema removes and replaces the earlier definition. The handler resolves the Unity project only after FastMCP validates the call, so project routing does not isolate the schemas. Calls from the first project that use its previous parameter shape can fail validation against the later schema.
Keep project schemas separate, or require one compatible signature for every project before replacing the global definition. The replacement is intentional for same-project domain reloads, but it introduces this cross-project regression.
