Cherry Pick: New File never overwrites a file the project panel does not list - #15
New File in the embedded project panel could write over a file the panel does not list (a hidden or filtered file), emptying it. This is one of the 7 High defects Heal reported for Cherry Pick.
49a93a0d — Worktree::create_entry_with creates a file exclusively (CreateOptions { overwrite: false, ignore_if_exists: false }). The parent folder is created only if it is missing. When the path already exists, it returns a typed EntryAlreadyExists. The project panel's confirm_edit uses it for new entries and shows the existing-name error instead of writing.
2fdc4700 — a file created this way starts empty, on both FakeFs and RealFs.
c0874ab7 — follow-up from review: a new folder is created exclusively too (a folder the panel does not list was recorded as newly created, so undo would trash it); only an AlreadyExists failure is reported as one, and FakeFs now fails that way like RealFs; the error names what was typed (vault/a.txt), not the last path component.
a8a1a796 — comments only: a new folder is looked for first (creating one that is there succeeds), so one made in the moment between is adopted; a new file is exclusive.
911be980 — follow-up from review: a failure to look at the parent or the target is reported as that failure instead of being read as "absent", and AlreadyExists from the create itself is reported as a taken name (a unit test pins which errors count as one). The documentation says a folder that appears after the look is adopted.
Tests: project_panel_tests.rs (a hidden file and a hidden folder are not overwritten, the error names what was typed, a free name is created) and crates/worktree/tests/integration/worktree_tests.rs (exclusive creation of files and folders, missing parent, existing target), plus a unit test in crates/worktree/src/worktree.rs. test_creating_excluded_entries now expects what a real filesystem does when a folder is created over a file: an error, not a toast.
Merge order
Merge this first. The Cherry Pick PR that follows moves the cherrypick-zed pin to 911be980.
Not covered
External drag-and-drop and paste into the project panel can still overwrite a hidden target. That is a separate, older path.
A remote worktree (collab or SSH remote server) still overwrites: proto::CreateProjectEntry carries no flag. Cherry Pick opens local worktrees only, so the protocol is left alone; the flag's documentation says so.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Creating a file or folder in a local workspace now reports an “already exists” error if the name is already taken, even when the existing item is not shown in the project panel.
Existing files and folders are preserved when a name is already in use.
Creating entries with unused names continues to work as expected.
Creating a file wrote it (fs.write of nothing), which empties a file already on
disk, and the only duplicate check read the worktree's scan, which lacks every
file the panel does not list: ones excluded by file_scan_exclusions, or inside a
folder that has not been scanned.
Worktree::create_entry_with(.., overwrite_file: false) creates the file
exclusively and fails with the typed EntryAlreadyExists when something is there,
however it got there; Project::create_new_entry routes to it and the panel uses
it for New File, showing the existing name error. create_entry keeps
overwriting for its other callers, and a remote worktree keeps its request.
The parent folder is created only when it is missing.
create_entry_with(overwrite_file: false) also wrote any content it was given
after creating the file, which no caller passes and which could not be atomic.
Content belongs to the overwriting path; the exclusive path now says so and
asserts it.

Walkthrough
Local worktrees now support non-overwriting entry creation. The project API exposes this option, and the project panel uses it for new entries. Existing overwrite-enabled creation remains available. Remote worktrees retain their existing overwrite behavior.
The worktree adds an EntryAlreadyExists error and an option for exclusive local creation. Tests cover file and directory collisions, nested paths, and the existing overwrite behavior. FakeFs reports existing-file errors as AlreadyExists.
Project creation API crates/project/src/project.rs
Project::create_new_entry requests creation without overwriting. Project::create_entry retains overwrite-enabled behavior.
New-entry confirmation uses Project::create_new_entry and returns a name-specific error for an existing entry. Tests cover excluded files and directories, preserved contents, and successful creation at free paths.
CodeCraftersLLC/zed#14: Updates project-panel validation and confirmation for sibling path collisions. This PR handles collisions through exclusive creation, including entries hidden from the panel scan.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main behavior change: new file creation no longer overwrites a file the project panel does not list. It also says it is a cherry pick. The title is specific and matches the changeset, though it omits the folder-creation and error-reporting parts.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections (Summary, Merge order, Not covered, Release Notes), but lacks the template's Objective heading with a Fixes reference, the Solution heading, a Testing section in the template form, the Self-Review Checklist, and a filled-in Release Notes entry. It explains the change, the tests, and the uncovered cases in detail, so it is mostly complete.
Resolution
Consider adding the template headings (Objective, Solution, Testing, Self-Review Checklist) and a linked issue if one exists. Replace the Release Notes section with a concrete entry or keep N/A as intended.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Preserve creation errors when the target already exists
The error branch treats any successful metadata lookup as proof that exclusive creation failed because the target exists. If creation fails for another reason while the target exists (for example, a permission or I/O error), callers receive the misleading “already exists” error instead of the actual failure; only map the specific already-exists error to EntryAlreadyExists. Propagate exclusive creation to remote worktrees.
Worktree::Remote omits overwrite_file from proto::CreateProjectEntry, and the host receiver calls the overwrite-enabled create_entry method. New File is available for editable SSH and collaboration projects. Because the remote request passes content: None, an existing unlisted file can be emptied.
Add overwrite_file to proto::CreateProjectEntry, forward it from Worktree::Remote, and have handle_create_entry call create_entry_with. If remote exclusive creation is intentionally deferred, narrow the Project::create_new_entry and project-panel documentation to local worktrees and document the remote limitation with the other known overwrite paths.

Add `overwrite_file` to `proto::CreateProjectEntry`, forward it when
constructing the request in `Worktree::Remote`, and update `handle_create_entry`
to pass the flag to `create_entry_with` so remote exclusive creation does not
overwrite existing files.

…isting name is reported as one
Review of the New File fix found three gaps:
- A new folder went through create_dir, which succeeds for a folder that is
already there, so a folder the panel does not list was recorded as newly
created and undo would trash it. Exclusive creation now covers folders.
- Any creation failure was reported as "already exists" when something was at
the path. Only an AlreadyExists failure is, and FakeFs now fails that way like
RealFs, so tests see the production error.
- The collision error named the last path component; it names what was typed.
Remote worktrees still overwrite: the protocol carries no flag, and Cherry Pick
opens local worktrees only. That is now stated where the flag is documented.

⚪ Low · 🧹 Quality — Propagate parent metadata errors before creating the directory
create_new treats every parent metadata error as a missing directory. When metadata fails for a reason other than absence, it attempts create_dir and returns that unrelated error instead of preserving the metadata failure; propagate metadata errors and create the parent only when metadata returns None. View in Corgea ↗

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — FakeFs changes the existing-path error type
FakeFs now returns an io::Error with AlreadyExists where it previously returned an anyhow error. Callers that downcast or otherwise rely on the previous error type for ignore_if_exists == false will no longer observe that error; preserve the existing error contract or update those callers to handle the new type. View in Corgea ↗
More Details 🪄Fix Explanation:
The error is now explicitly wrapped in "anyhow::Error", matching the function’s error type and avoiding reliance on implicit conversion. The existing "AlreadyExists" kind and message are preserved. - "anyhow::Error::new(...)" makes the returned error type explicit, aligning the code with the Rust API’s expected error type. - The nested "io::Error" retains "io::ErrorKind::AlreadyExists" and the path-specific message, so callers keep the same diagnostic information. - Removing the trailing ".into()" avoids an unnecessary conversion and makes the error construction clearer.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Handle a directory appearing between metadata check and creation
create_new returns the raw create_dir result after its metadata check, so if a directory appears between the check and creation, create_dir succeeds and the caller treats the pre-existing directory as newly created. On that race path undo can remove the directory and its contents; use an exclusive directory-creation operation or otherwise ensure a concurrent existing directory is reported as EntryAlreadyExists.
