Zed fork changes for the Cherry Pick fix-misc-bugs-9-claude work (the 12 October QA report), pinned by CodeCraftersLLC/cherrypick#164.
46 commits. Highlights:
Line endings: a buffer remembers where its line endings change; save and reload write each line's own ending (CR-only, mixed, CRLF), and blame and file writers follow the per-line endings.
Images: one bounded, EXIF-upright decoder (lenient ICO, header-only metadata, bounded SVG rasters, animated GIF/WebP within the raster limits); a PNG too large to decode whole is streamed into a bounded thumbnail.
Markdown: inline HTML and collapsible <details>; Mermaid failures say why and keep the source; a link to a missing heading says so.
git_ui diff preview: cards say why a side has no picture, name the size limit, and never drop an unreadable file.
Embedding seams: settings from a repository can be ignored by the host; debugger affordances and blame can be turned off; open_url_or_file allowlist; Open in Default App hidden for programs; EntryRenamed carries the old path.
Windows: the vsync loop leaves minimised and hidden windows alone; WM_SIZE logging.
The commit list holds the detail; each commit has its own tests.
Note
Medium Risk
Touches editor gutter/debug paths, git blame I/O with mixed line endings, and a large new image decode surface; changes are mostly gated for embedders and bounded by limits, but regressions could affect blame accuracy, diff previews, or a11y click behavior.
Overview
This cherry-pick batch tightens embedding behavior (hosts that do not run the full Zed shell), text/git correctness, image handling, and diff preview UX.
Line endings move from a single buffer-wide LineEnding to LineEndings (per-line / mixed). Saves, fake FS, buffer diff base-text updates, and git blame stdin now use chunks_with_line_endings so mixed CR/LF/CRLF files blame correctly.
Editor & git UI for embedders:Editor::set_debugging_enabled(false) strips breakpoint store, inline values, and debug gutter menu entries; blame is gated on BlameRenderer::is_available() (placeholder renderer counts as off). Project diff adds show_remote_status so embedded “view only” mode does not show a bogus “Remote up to date” line. CSV tabular preview sets enabled_for_all() so the preview button works in release without a flag store.
File finder: optional global set_new_name_validator blocks “Create file” / split-open for rejected names (with preview + tests); empty history shows “Type to search…” instead of “No matches”.
Commit diff preview stops faking load/truncation failures as multibuffer text. Files become notice cards or binary before/after cards with NoPreviewReason (budget, size limit, undecodable image, etc.); captions and truncation copy are explicit. Card cap applies to binary cards only; notices are always shown.
gpui images: new image_decode module centralizes raster decode (limits, EXIF upright, ICO largest-entry + RGB PNG fallback), decode_bgra_frames for the image cache, and streaming png_thumbnail for oversized PNGs without allocating the full raster. png 0.18 added to the workspace.
Accessibility: while a11y is active, on_click registers an Action::Click handler that invokes click listeners with a keyboard ClickEvent (no hit-test), so clipped/covered controls still activate; tests add enable_accessibility / simulate_a11y_action on VisualTestContext.
Misc: project::Event::EntryRenamed struct match update in the editor; editor tests for disabled debugging and blame without renderer.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Markdown previews support inline HTML formatting, links, and expandable <details> sections.
Commit previews show clearer notices when files or images can’t be displayed.
File creation and renaming show host-provided name validation errors; the file finder offers guidance when no search query is entered.
Accessibility actions can activate clickable controls, including controls clipped by their containers.
Project settings can be ignored, Mermaid preview errors explain why diagrams can’t render, and project diffs show clearer remote status.
Bug Fixes
Mixed line endings are preserved when editing, saving, formatting, and viewing Git blame.
Unavailable debugger and Git blame actions are no longer shown.
External links and Markdown image paths are restricted to supported destinations.
Modal focus is restored when needed; “Open in Default App” is withheld for remote items and programs, and cut-and-paste in the same folder no longer creates a copy.
…he most bits per pixel
The image crate picks the entry with the greatest bit depth and only then the
greatest area, so an icon with a 16 x 16 entry that has an alpha channel and a
256 x 256 one without showed the small one, upscaled. The decode and the header
read now reduce the directory to the entry with the greatest area, and among
those the greatest bit depth, before handing it to the decoder; the lenient PNG
fallback decodes the same entry.
…, and refused whole when they exceed them
The animated arms of the image asset loader and of the clipboard conversion
decoded with no limits at all (GifDecoder starts with none, WebPDecoder has
none) and kept every frame, so a README could point at a GIF that claims a huge
canvas or thousands of frames and take the app down.
gpui::decode_bgra_frames is now the one place raster files become renderer
frames. It checks the canvas against raster_limits() (MAX_RASTER_SIDE per side,
the SVG raster byte budget) before a frame is allocated, charges every frame it
keeps to the same budget, and stops at MAX_ANIMATION_FRAMES. Exceeding any of
them is the typed image limit error with no frames returned; a frame over the
limits is no longer skipped as if it were damaged. Still images use the same
raster_limits() instead of the image crate's defaults.
…, whatever attributes it had
<code class="x"> opens through the inline tag stack but </code> only popped the
text style stack, so the code style leaked to the rest of the block and the pop
took an unrelated style (bold from an enclosing **...**) off the stack.
With inline HTML rendered every code tag goes through the one inline tag stack;
the text style push and pop stay only for the mode that prints other tags as
text. The InlineHtml event handling moves into push_inline_html so a test can
drive it.
…hout a closing tag
The block parser treated only the first <details> of a block as the open-ended
one, so in a block with a complete <details> followed by one whose body continues
in later blocks, the first summary toggled the second's body and the second's
toggled nothing. details::details_balance matches the block's opening and
closing tags in source order and says which opened <details> stay open and how
many closing tags belong to an earlier block; the parser marks exactly those
open-ended, and the cross-block pairing uses the same balance, so a block that
closes one region and opens the next pairs both.
…s sit on the functions they describe
The oversize diagram test depended on how merman lays out a 400-node chain; the
bound it checks lives in rasterize_svg, which now takes an SVG directly. The
supported-diagram-types comment moves back onto is_supported_diagram_type and
the saving test's comment onto test_saving_changes_only_the_typed_character.
…e buffer had, except on the lines the diff wrote
apply_diff set every line to the first line's ending whenever the buffer had been
edited since the diff was made, so a mixed-ending file was silently rewritten
with one ending on the next save, and the test locked that in.
When the loaded text's offsets no longer index the buffer, the lines keep the
endings they had and only a line whose terminator the diff wrote takes the
ending the loaded text has for that terminator. LineEndings gains ending_at and
with_lines_overridden for that.
…ine endings, not one ending
write_file accepted impl Into<LineEndings>, so the callers that still passed a
single LineEnding compiled and quietly kept the old uniform behaviour: vim's
:w <file> on a range wrote every line with the first line's ending, and git
blame --contents sent lines whose terminator differs from the committed blob, so
they were attributed to no commit.
Worktree::write_file and LocalWorktree::write_file now take LineEndings, and the
From<LineEnding> conversion is gone, so every caller decides. GitRepository::blame,
Blame::for_path and run_git_blame take LineEndings; vim passes the endings of
the range it writes (LineEndings::slice); blame_buffer passes the buffer's when
the blamed text is the buffer's current text.
…s only the sides its status has, and a failed file is a notice card, not lines of the file
A side that is not text carries a NoPreviewReason (too large to preview, too many
pixels with the dimensions, undecodable, not an image), so its caption says what
happened instead of calling every refused picture "Binary ... (no preview)". A card
shows Before only for a file that had a before and After only for one that has an
after, so an added or deleted file no longer shows an empty half.
A file that failed to load, or is over the size a preview reads and has no size to
show, used to be added to the multibuffer as a line of text ("Unable to load diff
for ...", "File too large to preview"), which read as the file's content and was
diffed like it. It is now a notice card drawn with the binary cards; a failure wins
over a binary verdict. The cards are capped together, and the closing line counts
the files past the cap.
NoPreviewReason::TooLargeToPreview carries the limit that refused the file, so the
caption reads "6.0 MB - too large to preview (limit 1.0 MB)" for a text file over
the diff limit and names the 10 MB picture limit for a picture, instead of one
sentence for both. A file refused only because the rest of the preview took the
room names no limit.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Preserve palette transparency when expanding PNG thumbnails
png_thumbnail expands indexed PNG palettes but does not request png::Transformations::ALPHA, so palette transparency (tRNS) is discarded and transparent palette entries are treated as opaque. When a large indexed PNG with transparent pixels is thumbnailed, its preview has incorrect opaque pixels; request alpha expansion along with EXPAND. View in Corgea ↗
We could not generate a fix for this.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not reproducible: EXPAND in png 0.18 already expands tRNS to alpha. The "palette with transparency" case in every_png_colour_type_and_depth_is_read asserts alpha 128 and passes.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Reject malformed closing-tag suffixes
InlineTag::parse treats any recognized name after </ as a closing tag without checking that the tag name ends there. For input such as </b garbage> or </br/>, it returns Close(Bold) or Close(LineBreak), so malformed text can unexpectedly close formatting or create a line break; validate the remainder of closing tags before returning Close. View in Corgea ↗
We could not generate a fix for this.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Unreachable: parse only sees pulldown-cmark InlineHtml events, and CommonMark closing tags allow no suffix. Probed </b garbage> and </br/>: neither becomes an InlineHtml event, so they stay text.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Require a valid boundary after the exact details tag name
details_tags treats : as the end of a tag name, so an HTML custom element such as <details:widget> is incorrectly counted as an opening <details> tag. When such markup appears in an HTML block, it can leave a false unclosed region and cause unrelated Markdown content to be hidden; parse the complete HTML tag name and require a valid boundary after the exact name details. View in Corgea ↗
More Details 🪄Fix Explanation:
Tag recognition now accepts namespace-style colons in names while requiring a valid boundary after "details". This prevents similarly prefixed names from being misclassified as security-relevant details tags. - "matches!(c, '-' | ':')" allows colons as part of tag names, so names such as "details:custom" are parsed as a whole rather than as "details". - "valid_boundary" requires whitespace, "/", or ">" after the name, matching valid tag syntax. - Guards on both open and closing tag matches ensure only exact "details" tags are recognized; names like "detailsx" no longer trigger details handling.

Validate images against the document's worktree
In a multi-root workspace, relative images in Markdown documents outside the first worktree now fail to load. render_markdown supplies workspace_directory from worktrees(cx).next(), while base_directory comes from the active document, so an existing image beside a document in a second, disjoint worktree always fails this prefix check. Previously those relative images resolved against the document directory without this restriction. Select the document's containing worktree for the containment check so the new boundary does not exclude legitimate project images.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Check cancellation and deadline during thumbnail finalization
png_thumbnail can exceed its documented deadline or ignore cancellation after the final row. When a large thumbnail has finished streaming, reader.finish() and the output-pixel loop run without another checkpoint(), so a cancellation or deadline reached during that work still returns a thumbnail; check during finalization and before returning. View in Corgea ↗
More Details 🪄Fix Explanation:
Adds cancellation checkpoints during PNG finalization and thumbnail processing, so exceptional conditions such as a cancelled operation are detected instead of allowing expensive work to continue. - "checkpoint()?" before "reader.finish()" checks cancellation before validating trailing PNG data. - Periodic checks every 1,024 pixels in the thumbnail loop bound how long pixel averaging can continue after cancellation. - A final checkpoint after orientation catches cancellation before the completed image is returned. - Propagating errors with "?" keeps cancellation handling consistent with the function’s existing error flow.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Exclude skipped hunks from loaded-offset tracking
loaded_start becomes incorrect when an earlier diff hunk is discarded as a conflict. For example, if the first hunk is skipped and a later hunk is applied, loaded_delta still includes the skipped hunk's length change, so adopt_loaded_line_endings reads endings from the wrong offsets in loaded and assigns incorrect line endings to the applied text; update loaded_delta only for hunks that are actually applied. View in Corgea ↗
We could not generate a fix for this.

Not a defect. The loaded text contains every hunk, applied or skipped, so a skipped hunk's length change does shift later loaded offsets. Excluding it would misread endings.

⚪ Low · 🧹 Quality — Inline HTML links may bypass the preview URL handler
open_allowlisted_link is used only when no handler is supplied, but the new inline-HTML link path does not install or invoke on_open_url and instead creates a normal rendered link. Clicking an <a href> in a Markdown preview therefore opens it through the OS rather than the preview's URL handler, so local paths and heading fragments do not navigate within the preview. Route inline-HTML links through the same on_open_url callback as Markdown links. View in Corgea ↗

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Validate closing-tail offsets before slicing UTF-8 source
parse_html_children can panic when tail.start is not a UTF-8 character boundary. For a closing </details> preceded by non-ASCII text, closing_tails(source) may provide a byte offset inside a multibyte character; parsing then indexes source[from..] and crashes instead of rendering the Markdown. Ensure the tail offset is a valid boundary or derive it from a character-safe slice. View in Corgea ↗
More Details 🪄Fix Explanation:
Using "source.get(from..)?" replaces unchecked slicing with bounds-checked access. If "from" is out of range, the function returns "None" instead of panicking, preventing a crash. - "source[from..]" panics when "from" exceeds the source length; "get" safely handles invalid ranges. - The "?" operator propagates the failed lookup through the function’s existing "Option" return type. - This makes parsing more robust for unexpected offsets without adding manual bounds checks.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not reachable: the offset is the end of an ASCII tag match, found on an ASCII-lowercased copy that keeps byte offsets, so it is always a character boundary. Left as is.

🟠 Medium · 🧹 Quality — Validate SVG scale and dimensions before casting
render_pixmap casts dimensions before validating the scale, so a non-finite or excessively large scale_factor can saturate the dimensions to u32::MAX (or produce zero for a negative scale) and evade the byte/side checks through overflow or zero dimensions. Calling render_single_frame_bounded with such a scale can then attempt an enormous allocation or fail unexpectedly; reject non-finite/non-positive scales and validate dimensions in a wider representation before casting. View in Corgea ↗
More Details 🪄Fix Explanation:
Validates SVG scale and dimensions before converting to "u32", rejecting invalid or out-of-range sizes. Checked multiplication also prevents overflow when enforcing the raster byte limit. -Rejects non-finite or non-positive "scale" values before calculating dimensions. -Computes dimensions in "f64" and checks finiteness, minimum size, and "u32" bounds before casting, avoiding invalid conversions. -Uses "checked_mul" for pixel and byte counts; overflow is treated as exceeding "MAX_RASTER_BYTES". -Returns "InvalidSize" for invalid dimensions and preserves the existing "TooLarge" error for raster-limit violations.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Partly valid. Bad scales were already refused; the byte product could overflow with a huge max_side. Now checked arithmetic refuses it as too large. Test: scale 1e20 and infinity with max_side u32::MAX.

⚪ Low · 🧹 Quality — Use a collision-free ID for disclosure elements
The html-details element ID can collide for distinct regions because it encodes (start, ordinal) as start * 64 + ordinal. When two details elements have different starts and ordinals whose differences offset by 64, GPUI sees the same element ID, so focus and interaction state can attach to the wrong disclosure; use a collision-free tuple ID. 🔴 High · 🧹 Quality — Adam7 samples are not weighted by their pass spacing
png_thumbnail assigns every Adam7 pass row to the thumbnail cell for its source y, so later passes overwrite the same row's sums instead of contributing to the full-resolution pixels represented by that thumbnail row. For an interlaced PNG, the returned thumbnail therefore omits most pixels and has incorrect colors; accumulate each pass sample with its proper area contribution or deinterlace before downsampling. loaded_delta advances for every diff hunk, including hunks later discarded as conflicts. When an earlier hunk conflicts but a later hunk applies, loaded_start for that later hunk is shifted by text that was never written; adopt_loaded_line_endings then reads the wrong loaded terminator (or an offset beyond the loaded text), so the surviving edit can receive an incorrect line ending. Advance the loaded offset only for hunks that are actually represented in the resulting buffer, or otherwise map the surviving hunk to its original loaded offset. View in Corgea ↗

Not a defect: loaded_start indexes the loaded text, which contains every hunk, so a hunk dropped from the buffer still moves later loaded offsets. Buffer offsets use the separate delta.

Zed fork changes for the Cherry Pick
fix-misc-bugs-9-claudework (the 12 October QA report), pinned by CodeCraftersLLC/cherrypick#164.46 commits. Highlights:
<details>; Mermaid failures say why and keep the source; a link to a missing heading says so.open_url_or_fileallowlist; Open in Default App hidden for programs;EntryRenamedcarries the old path.VisualTestContext::enable_accessibility, readable scrollbar bounds, screen-reader Click runs click handlers directly.
Line endings move from a single buffer-wide
LineEndingtoLineEndings(per-line / mixed). Saves, fake FS, buffer diff base-text updates, andgit blamestdin now usechunks_with_line_endingsso mixed CR/LF/CRLF files blame correctly.Editor & git UI for embedders:
Editor::set_debugging_enabled(false)strips breakpoint store, inline values, and debug gutter menu entries; blame is gated onBlameRenderer::is_available()(placeholder renderer counts as off). Project diff addsshow_remote_statusso embedded “view only” mode does not show a bogus “Remote up to date” line. CSV tabular preview setsenabled_for_all()so the preview button works in release without a flag store.File finder: optional global
set_new_name_validatorblocks “Create file” / split-open for rejected names (with preview + tests); empty history shows “Type to search…” instead of “No matches”.Commit diff preview stops faking load/truncation failures as multibuffer text. Files become notice cards or binary before/after cards with
NoPreviewReason(budget, size limit, undecodable image, etc.); captions and truncation copy are explicit. Card cap applies to binary cards only; notices are always shown.gpui images: new
image_decodemodule centralizes raster decode (limits, EXIF upright, ICO largest-entry + RGB PNG fallback),decode_bgra_framesfor the image cache, and streamingpng_thumbnailfor oversized PNGs without allocating the full raster.png0.18 added to the workspace.Accessibility: while a11y is active,
on_clickregisters anAction::Clickhandler that invokes click listeners with a keyboardClickEvent(no hit-test), so clipped/covered controls still activate; tests addenable_accessibility/simulate_a11y_actiononVisualTestContext.Misc:
project::Event::EntryRenamedstruct match update in the editor; editor tests for disabled debugging and blame without renderer.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 1e74633. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
